Aluminum emerges as the sustainable alternative to PVC in the construction sector.

The latest report from the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) on PVC confirms the toxicity of some of the elements that make up this material used mainly in the construction sector. Specifically, the report indicates that this compound contains toxic additives related to hormonal alterations.

Given the report made public by ECHA, a total of 67 non-governmental organizations from all over Europe, led by the European Environmental Bureau (EBB), have approached the European Commission to request the elimination of PVC before 2030. This scenario requires to look for safer and more sustainable alternatives to renew the construction sector.

58% of PVC manufactured worldwide is directed to the construction sector, however this plastic material lacks systems and facilities to recover it. This is revealed by the “Study on the recyclability of PVC and aluminum carpentry materials” published by the Spanish Aluminum Association (AEA).

Aluminum, an infinitely recyclable material

The great diversity of materials that make up PVC complicates its circularity. The same report, however, indicates that more than 90% of the aluminum used in construction materials is recycled. This metal can be recycled infinite times without losing its properties and without reducing its quality.

At Aluval, we design, manufacture and distribute aluminum profiles, both for buildings and for different sectors of the industry. Our commitment is to the environment.
