After the publication of the UNE EN 17213 Standard, the Spanish version of the European Standard that determines the Product Category Rules for windows and pedestrian doors when making an Environmental Product Declaration, the DAP of windows in the that AEA has been working, with the collaboration of ALUVAL among other companies in the sector, since the middle of last year. The result has already been published on July 22, 2020 in the two most prestigious entities in this field, such as the Swedish ENVIRONDEC system of The International EPD System (DAP SP-02163) and the international Global EPD (IntEPD SP-02163 ), represented in Spain by AENOR.
It should be noted that when preparing a DAP for windows of any material, it is especially important to analyze Module D, which includes the recycling section of the material used, which is an important part of the contribution to sustainability and the economy. circular.
Aluminum windows exceed this section with a very good note, since the aluminum recovery rate at the time of "deconstruction" of a building reaches 95% according to the empirical data collected by the available studies.
At the same time, the "recycled content" in new windows is increasing as products that reach the end of their long useful life (which may have extended beyond 40 years) are brought into recycling. ).
It must be taken into account that 75% of all the aluminum that has been manufactured worldwide since its discovery of its industrial process, some 120 years ago, is still in use. Therefore, we have a very important reserve of aluminum that can be used again as a raw material by future generations, after being recycled. For this, only a minimal part (specifically 5%) of the energy that was necessary to contribute for its initial manufacture from bauxite will be used.
This significant energy saving makes aluminum behave as an excellent "energy store", since if we say that only 5% of the initial energy is required for recycling, it means that the remaining 95% remains inside, which ultimately makes aluminum behave like a “power bank”.
